Server behind NAT firewall and Dynamic IP

Post by Lizard »

Just installed and registered server build 162. Setup domain as SFTP, and it works great. Tried to setup domain as regular FTP, but can't get client to connect - suspect it is a NAT issue. Had been using WarFTP server (very nice, but no SFTP), and it has a nat.conf file where you can specify your dynamic IP host name (dns2go, dyndns, etc) and other info, and it works well with NAT and a dynamic IP address. Any way to deal with this with Core server, or any plans to make it work? (Currently using Core for SFTP and WarFTP for the regular FTP, which works fine, but would love to just run the one if possible). Thanks for a nice product! :D

Sounds good. Yes, I use dns2go myself. It runs a small client on my server that checks my public IP every few minutes, and reports it back to their server. For example, one of my addresses is Lizard.dns2go.com, which returns my current public IP. Since SFTP only uses one port, it works fine with a simple port forward in my firewall, but FTP, of course, isn't that simple. I think the WarFTP used the config file (where you could specify a Domain Name) to check with the dns2go.com address to resolve the IP, and then used it in the Address field. By the way, the SFTP is working great for my daughter, who is at college behind its firewall. Thanks!

Excellent! That works Great – and to have a feature added in two days is awesome! To be able to run this behind a firewall with a dynamic IP is a very nice feature that I was having a hard time finding. Thanks for the response. :D Now, I have another question, but I’ll do a search first, and start a different thread if I can’t find the answer…
