new user and was told upload was garbled

I up-loaded a word file to the ftp server. I am trying to get a transcription job. The person at the other end told me she found my test "sort of" but that is was in some type of format she could not read. I uploaded from the left side into the right, clicked upload. I saw the file on the right side. How do I check if it is correct and did I do this correctly? Thanks anyone who can help.
