System beep on ListView select

Just to let you know, CoreFTP falls foul of this bug in Windows Vista:

Maybe it can be fixed by using a different control, or informing the user of the problem if their operating system and settings fulfil the bug's conditions?

This problem is strictly with Core FTP and not related to the Microsoft KB article you mention. I have come to this conclusion since I have one machine that this is very aggravating considering it does not have a sound card installed; in other words, the speaker on the motherboard is doing the beeping rather than a system sound. Also on that same system the problem is not just in CoreFTP but happens any where a list selection box is presented within Vista. On other systems I have even tried disabling the sound card and/or muting the master volume, but the beep still happens.
As for why I think its a CoreFTP problem is that I can uninstall CoreFTP and the problem goes away. After a reinstall the problem returns. Then there is the other funny little quirk that I can duplicate the problem on 11 different machines with different versions of Vista. I get the annoying little beep in the following versions:

I have tried downloading a new install from different locations but all of them are the same. The install version I have received is:
Version 2.1 (build 1586), updated December 12th, 2008

Running Vista home premium and I do not have this problem.

I also tried it in Windows 7 Beta and there is no sound issues.

I went to the MS web site linked. The suggestion (#1) for a "silent" wave file did not work. But (#2), altering the registry, [i]did [/i]work. Thanks for the tip.

Same problem, reg key fixed the problem.

For those that don't want to click on the MS Link here's some instant gratification:

-- Close CoreFTP. (Finish your transfers first if you need to.)

-- Click Start Ball, click "Run" if it's there and type "regedit" and click OK, otherwise type "regedit" in search box and press enter to run it.

-- One UAC prompt later, locate the following key in the left window. Start from the top of the window. (You can use "Find..." but it's excruciatingly slow.)

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\CCSelect

Open the folder to CCSelect and you'll find a folder that says ".Current". Right click that folder and delete it.

-- Close Regedit and restart CoreFTP. Aaaah, silence!

This also works on other older Apps that have that type of listbox control. This is considered destructive of the registry, since the fix that Microsoft recommends at the top of the KB article doesn't delete that key, just replaces the default sound with a silent .WAV file. But it didn't work on my system, and honestly, who wants a sound each click you make on a simple list? I find that an annoying thought.

Hmmm...

I got rid of this once and it came back. I think it was the installation SP2 that put the reigstry key back. And I was naive enough to think that Service Packs were supposed to cure things like this...

So when you install Vista Service Packs, you'll have to edit the registry again
