FTPS works but SFTP doesn't

OK, I'll start with I'm not an FTP expert. I set up the server, I want to limit it to only SFTP (port 22) connections to simplify firewall setups. Using CoreFTP client, I can't connect if I set the site to SSH/SFTP "Can't establish connection --> 10.0.0.112:22 @ Thu Oct 05 14:31:14 2017 (10038-1460)". I have the server set to port 22, and only SSH/SFTP checked. If I change the client to FTPS, with no other changes, I can connect, but watching the server activity, I see it switching to passive mode and opening all kinds of other ports, which may not work for our external partners. I'm stumped.
