How to run server automatically ie auto start(service)

How do you set this up to run all the time as long as the computer is on? I assume that you would just check the box for Auto Start. Do you have to do this before you start the server running? Are you able to then close that window somehow? Whenever I close the window it shuts down the server... (can this be run in the background?)
