Cannot download anything from large directory

I have a large directory. 40K+ files. I can't download from it at all. When I try to download the entire directory, CoreFTP just steps through the files, very slowly (a few minutes pause between each file), and each time, asks if I want to overwrite the 700K file with one that has a size of -1 that was created in 1969. Nothing every downloads. I'm using the latest version of CORE FTP Pro.

It is my understanding that freebsd has a maximum number of folders that can be in one directory set to like 39,000.... does anyone know how to increase this or if it can be increased?
