coreftp.exe does not launch. used to previously

I have coreftp lite installed on an XP system that used to work just fine.
Suddenly it stopped working and gives me a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error:
"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I have completely removed (cleared registry) and re-installed coreftp. Still the same error.
Any help would be appreciated.
